Hannibal Timeline

Important dates and events in the history of Hannibal.

1819 - Town founded by Moses D. Bates
1830 - Towns population is 30; first school is built on the city square
1831 - First river ferry boat operating
1837 - Hannibal gets its first newspaper, the Commercial Advertiser
1839 - Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) moves to Hannibal
1845 - chartered as a city
1850 - Towns population is 2020
1853 - Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) moves out of Hannibal
1859 - The Hannibal & St. Joseph Railroad is completed, it is the first railroad to cross the state of Missouri
1861-1865 - Civil War. Hannibal is occupied by Union soldiers for the duration of the war.
1866 - Hannibal's first high school is built; Town builds state's first city-owned light and power plant
1867 - Margaret Tobin Brown (Molly Brown) born in Hannibal
1879 - The first telephone service begins in Hannibal
1889 - The first tax-supported library in Missouri is established
1890 - Electric powered street car makes its initial run in town
1891 - The Daily Post, founded by Thomas B. Morris in 1886, combines with the Missouri Courier and the Hannibal Courier-Post newspaper is born.
1902 - Mark Twain's last visit to Hannibal; William P. Lear, inventor of the first automobile radio, the first automatic pilot of airplanes and the inventor/producer of the Lear Jet is born in Hannibal.
1929 - Hannibal-LaGrange College is opened.
1935 - The Mark Twain Memorial Lighthouse is dedicated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. It will be rededicated by Presidents John F. Kennedy and Bill Clinton.
1973 - Great Flood of 1973. Causes more than $350 million dollars in damages and kills 30 in the Hannibal area.
1990 - Population is 18,004.
1993 - Hannibal suffers a huge flood. Mississippi River reaches it's highest point in recorded history.
1993 - Hannibal gets old bridge removed; new one built. Bridge Section.
