Riverboat Saturday Night Jazz Cruise

Music lovers need not travel to New Orleans to catch some of the best jazz and blues afloat on the Mississippi. A new sound has been heard floating on the waves near the Hannibal riverfront every Saturday night. Ben Bumbry and the Messengers, a seven-piece group, have been playing on the Mark Twain Riverboat dinner cruises for years, and now they can be heard every Saturday on a special Jazz Cruise.

The cruise features Bumbry on the drums, and the Messengers on the piano, sax, bass guitar, trumpet, and trombone. The group, which has been together since 1956, is also known to have special guest musicians and vocalists from the surrounding communities. Bumbry, now a teacher in Quincy, started playing in the St. Louis high school where he grew up. He had the chance, at one time, to fill in for a drummer who was sick. He played so well that he became a regular in the band. Later, he organized his own group and he has been playing with it ever since.

Bumbry says he finds it gratifying to see so many people relaxing during the cruise as they listen or dance to the music. "I like people," Bumbry said, "and I really like seeing people smile and enjoying themselves as we play. "

Steve Terry, owner of the Mark Twain Riverboat Company, says that he and Ben have been wanting "to put together a jazz cruise for several years." Terry, a musician himself, acquired the riverboat in 1996, and felt like 1997 was the year to start this floating River Jazz Fest.

The Jazz Cruise boards every Saturday night at 9 p.m., June through August, and embarks on its musical adventure at 9:30 p.m. The cruise lasts until 11:30 p.m. and is a relaxed adult atmosphere with a cash bar. For more information, contact the Mark Twain Riverboat at (573) 221-3222.
