Kids Guide

Hannibal is a great place for an adventure.
Kids love the area's beautiful terrain, the same terrain that
inspired Mark Twain to write his most exciting novels. The
rolling hills and numerous caves ignite the imagination of
every child that loves to explore and play. This guide will help kids find amazing places that will
let them have some adventure while learning about this
historical area at the same time.
Kids love to explore, and there is no better place to have an
adventure than in the Mark Twain Cave and Cameron Cave. Both
are located south of Hannibal, off Highway 79. Mark Twain Cave
offers a 55 minute tour of the cave that inspired some of
Twain's most exciting adventure stories about Huck Finn and
Tom Saywer.
Mark Twain Cave is a lighted cave and is beautiful, but if a
more rustic experience appeals to your kids then head to
Cameron Cave, which is right next to Mark Twain Cave. Cameron
Cave is not lighted and several visitors are required to carry
lanterns during the 1 hour and 20 minute tour. The cave is a
maze of tunnels that has remained virtually unchanged since
it's discovery in 1925.
When you're done at the caves, everyone can enjoy a treat at
Olivias's Ice Cream Parlor and restaurant, which is located in
the Mark Twain Cave Park.
The caves are a great way to get the kids some exercise but if
they're tired of walking and love the water, then take a ride
on Hannibal's Riverboat. The Mark Twain Riverboat is a great
way to relax and see the Mississippi. There are a verity of
cruises offered, the best one for kids would be the one hour
sightseeing cruise.
For fun near the river, not on it, Sawyer's Creek is the place
to go. It's located south of Hannibal on Highway 79 and offers
a wide verity of activities for all ages. Kids can play a
round of putter golf or can slam into each other on the
bumper boats while parents can enjoy the different shops and
food available at the park. There is also a shooting gallery,
arcade, and bumper cars. There is no admission to the park and
it's a good place to spend the afternoon.
There are several other outdoor areas where kids can run off
extra energy. Riverview park is located at the north end of
Hannibal, right on the Mississippi river. The park covers 400
acres, but if that's not enough room then head to Mark Twain
Lake. There are more than 35,000 acres of land here for
everyone to enjoy.
After a full day of activities, the Mark Twain Outdoor Theatre
is a good place to stop off in the evening. The theatre offers
a two hour play at 8:30 that depicts many of Twain's
characters reenacting several scenes from some of Twain's
books based in Hannibal. Clemens Landing is the site of the
theatre and is located four miles south of town, off Highway
61. There are a verity of other activities for kids to partake
in here. There is a Go-Cart race track, batting cages and a
putt-putt golf course.
Right next to Clemens Landing is Injun Joe Campground. The
campground offers a swimming pool, free fishing lake, water
slide and a game room.
Finally, for fans of the movies, there is the Molly Brown
Birthplace and Museum. The unsinkable Molly Brown, survivor of
the Titanic, was born in Hannibal and was portrayed by Kathy
Bates in the 1997 blockbuster, Titanic.
