Keokuk bridge may open tonight

HAMILTON, Ill. - Illinois Division of Highways crews continued working
today to build a road up to the closed bridge linking Hamilton and Keokuk,
Iowa, and the bridge may be open as early as tonight. The bridge is located
about 65 miles north of Hannibal.
The bridge was closed earlier this month when flood waters reached U.S.
136 in Hamilton, closing access between Iowa and Illinois.
According to the highway division office in Mount Sterling, Ill., crews
began building a gravel road Sunday between concrete dividers leading to the
bridge on the Illinois side.
The concrete barriers will act as a levee to keep water and waves out,
and to keep gravel from being washed away.
The four-lane bridge will be reduced to two lanes.
Without the Keokuk-Hamilton bridge, the closest bridge to Hannibal is in
Burlington, Iowa, 95 miles north.
