River rises slightly

The Mississippi River rose slightly again in Hannibal overnight and stood at 23.85 feet at 5 a.m. today after rain fell overnight in Northeast Missouri parts of Iowa.

The river rose .37 of a foot from Wednesday¹s level. The high-water mark this spring was 24.15 feet April 27.

Technical flood stage in Hannibal is 16 feet.

The National Weather Service in St. Louis reported rain fell north of Hannibal overnight and predicted a chance of rain in Northeast Missouri through Sunday.

The river also rose .1 foot in Clarksville, bringing the level there to 31.5 feet. Route 79 south of Clarksville remains closed because of high water.

However, the river level in Saverton, which is between Clarksville and Hannibal, was down .8 foot to 22.59 feet this morning.

The Mark Twain Lake Level remained the same at 624.2 feet. Normal pool at the lake is 606 feet.

In Winfield, the river was at 32.88 feet this morning, still close to the top of the 34-foot levee, according to measurements taken at Lock and Dam 25. The river there is up .11 feet from Wednesday Flood stage in Winfield is 26 feet.

Chris Sifford, a spokesman for Gov. Mel Carnahan, said today that the state has not yet heard from the federal government whether parts of Lincoln and St. Charles counties would be eligible for federal disaster relief.

Sifford said the governor would tour St. Charles County again Friday.

In Lewis County, the sheriff's office reported road crews had barely finished patching large holes in Route B near LaGrange when water rose again. Warning signs were put back up to alert drivers about high water.

Water remains high in the LaGrange business district.

The bridge between Alexandria and Keokuk, Iowa, remains closed. The good news is the river is down .6 of a foot in Keokuk at 18.5 feet.
