River rises again; level reaches 24.15 feet today

The Mississippi River level reached its highest point yet this spring in
Hannibal at 24.15 feet.
According to the Hannibal Filter Plant, the river was 24.15 feet at 10
a.m. today, the third-highest on record. The river level was 24.11 feet
Monday.
The river is expected to crest today at 24.2 feet in Hannibal and sink
below 24 feet by Friday, according to the National Weather Service in St.
Louis.
However, showers were reported in Iowa today and are expected to move
into Northeast Missouri by tonight.
The previous high water mark this spring was 24.13 feet Friday.
Technical flood stage in Hannibal is 16 feet.
Several streets near Bear Creek remain under water, including South
Sixth, South Seventh, South Ninth, South 10th, South 11th, South Maple,
South Main, Jefferson, Monroe, Sycamore and Bluff streets.
Water still surrounds the Admiral Coontz Recreation Center and most of
Clemens Field is under water.
Meanwhile in Lincoln County, water is threatening to come over the top
of a levee near Winfield. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is watching the
levee, although no one has been evacuated.
Lock and Dam 25 near Winfield reported the river level at 33.88 feet
this morning. Water reaches the top of the levee there at 34 feet.
The river is expected to crest in Winfield Wednesday at 33.9 feet.
Volunteers have sandbagged low-lying areas and road crossings, but no
one has been evacuated and the Corps expects the levee to hold.
A large levee near Elsberry that protects about 20,000 acres remains in
good shape, according to the Corps.
In Lewis County, the sheriff¹s office reported water still covers part
of the LaGrange downtown area, and Route B near Canton and LaGrange remains
closed because of high water.
In Pike County, Route 79 remains closed near Clarksville and drivers are
detoured to Route W to Paynesville.
The river was expected to crest today in Louisiana at 24.9 feet, and
then drop several feet by Friday. Flood stage in Louisiana is 15 feet.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Macon, the bridge over
the Des Moines River between Alexandria and Keokuk, Iowa, remains closed and
drivers still are being detoured north to a toll bridge in St. Francisville
into Iowa.
Mark Twain Lake remains high at 625.5 feet. The normal lake level is 606
feet. Access roads near the lake remain closed.
