Ilasco author wins national book award
6/08/98
Gregg Andrews¹ "City of Dust: A Cement Company Town in the Land of Tom
Sawyer" has received Phi Alpha Theta¹s 1997 Best Book Award in the Category
of Author¹s Subsequent Book.
Andrews is in the final stages of a new book on Ilasco (1903-1930) that
features sisters Mollie Sykes Heinbach and Euphemia (Feemy) Koller and their
legal struggle over the land that formed much of the town site of Ilasco.
The book spotlights the Sykes family, many Ilasco and Ralls County
residents, New London officials, and prominent judges and attorneys in the
Hannibal area. If anyone has memories of these sisters or anything related
to their role in the community, contact Andrews by mail at: Department of
History, Southwest Texas State University, 601 University Drive, San Marcos,
Texas 78666, or by phone: (512)245-2142
